A good UK-used laptop can give years of service for far less than a new one. These checks help you avoid a bad one.
The 12-point checklist
- Battery health and cycle count. On Windows, run
powercfg /batteryreportin Command Prompt; on a Mac, check System Settings > Battery. - Screen: look for dead pixels, bright spots and lines on plain white and black backgrounds.
- Keyboard: test every key, including the space bar and Enter.
- Trackpad: check clicks, scrolling and gestures.
- Ports: test every USB, HDMI and charging port.
- Storage health: an SSD is much faster than a hard drive; check its health with a free tool.
- RAM and processor: confirm they match the advert in System Information or About This Mac.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: connect to a network and a device.
- Webcam, speakers and microphone: test them in a video call.
- Heat and noise: run something demanding for a few minutes and listen for loud fans.
- Hinges and body: check for cracks and loose hinges.
- Charger: make sure it is the right wattage and works.
