Small appliances do a lot of daily work. Here is what to look for in the four most popular ones.
Air fryer
An air fryer crisps chips, plantain, chicken and fish with little or no oil.
| Household | Capacity |
|---|---|
| 1–2 people | About 2–3.5 litres |
| Family | About 4–7 litres |
Dual-basket models cook two foods at once. Leave space behind for the hot air outlet and plug it straight into a wall socket, since air fryers draw high power.
Rice cooker
A rice cooker cooks rice and switches to keep-warm automatically. About 1.5–1.8 litres suits most families. A steaming tray lets you steam vegetables or fish at the same time.
Electric kettle
An electric kettle should have auto shut-off and boil-dry protection. Stainless steel and glass models last longer and don't hold plastic tastes. Descale it regularly if your water leaves white deposits.
Steam iron
A steam iron removes creases faster than a dry iron, and vertical steam freshens clothes on hangers. Use filtered water to reduce scale and look for auto shut-off.
Safety on Ghana's power supply
- Don't run several high-power appliances on one extension board.
- Use surge-protected boards, and unplug appliances during storms.
- Never leave heating appliances running unattended.
