Some standing cookers mix gas burners with electric hot plates, useful when either gas or power runs short.

Features to look for

  • Auto ignition: no matches needed.
  • Flame-failure protection: cuts the gas if the flame blows out.
  • Oven type: gas or electric.
  • Width: 50, 60 or 90 cm. Measure your space.

Install your cylinder safely

  1. Keep the cylinder upright, on a flat surface, away from the cooker's heat.
  2. Use a good-quality regulator and hose, and replace a hose that is cracked or stiff.
  3. Keep hose runs short and away from hot surfaces.
  4. Make sure the kitchen is ventilated.

How to check for a gas leak

Brush soapy water over the hose and connections with the cylinder valve open. Bubbles mean a leak. Close the cylinder valve, open windows, don't switch lights on or off, and fix the connection before using the cooker. Never use a flame to check for leaks.

Daily safety habits

  • Close the cylinder valve when you finish cooking.
  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Keep curtains and paper away from burners.
  • Teach children to stay clear of the cooker.
