Your electricity bill depends mostly on a few big appliances. Here is how to cut what each one uses.
Air conditioner: usually the biggest
- Set it to 24–26 °C instead of the lowest setting.
- Close doors and windows and draw curtains on sunny sides.
- Clean filters every two to four weeks.
- Choose an inverter AC when you replace it. Read inverter vs non-inverter.
Fridge and freezer: running 24/7
- Keep doors closed and seals clean.
- Leave space behind for ventilation.
- Don't put hot food straight in; let it cool first.
- Choose a model with more Energy Commission stars and an inverter compressor.
Washing machine
- Wash full loads.
- Use cold or warm washes instead of hot when you can.
- A front load washing machine uses less water and spins clothes drier.
Iron and kettle
- Iron in one session instead of many short ones.
- Boil only the water you need.
Lighting and standby
- Switch to LED bulbs.
- Switch off TVs, decoders and chargers at the wall when not in use.
Protect what you own
