Best MacBook to Buy in 2027: M1 to M5 Compared

The best MacBook to buy in 2027 for most people is a MacBook Air with an M2, M3 or M4 chip and 16GB of memory. An M1 MacBook Air is still a capable machine for students and office work at a lower price, but it has the shortest software runway of any Apple silicon Mac. Buy a MacBook Pro only if your work needs sustained performance, the brighter ProMotion screen or extra ports. Do not buy an Intel MacBook in 2027: Apple has announced that macOS Tahoe is the last major macOS version for Intel Macs. This guide compares every Apple silicon generation from a 2027 point of view and shows which one fits your budget and work.

Updated October 2026. We update this guide as Apple releases new models.

Why are Intel MacBooks out in 2027?

At its developer conference in June 2025, Apple said that macOS Tahoe (macOS 26) would be the last major macOS release for Intel-based Macs. Those Macs will receive security updates for a period after that, but no new macOS versions, and app developers are steadily moving to Apple silicon only.

In practice, an Intel MacBook bought in 2027 is a machine with a shrinking future. You will find them cheap, especially UK used, and for very light use they still work. But for a laptop you want to rely on for several years, choose one with an Apple M-series chip.

How to tell: click the Apple menu, then About This Mac. Apple silicon Macs show "Chip: Apple M1" (or M2, M3, M4, M5). Intel Macs show "Processor: Intel".

How do the M1 to M5 generations compare in 2027?

ChipFirst MacBooksStrengths in 2027Things to know
M1 (2020)MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13Still fast for documents, browsing, Office and light editing; excellent battery lifeOldest Apple silicon; likely the first to lose new macOS versions. Most units have 8GB. One external display on the Air
M2 (2022)Redesigned MacBook Air 13 and 15, MacBook Pro 13Larger, brighter screen, MagSafe charging, thinner designCheck 8GB vs 16GB; base 256GB models had slower storage than the M1
M3 (2023 to 2024)MacBook Air 13 and 15, MacBook Pro 14 and 16Faster graphics; Air supports two external displays with the lid closedA good middle ground for UK used buyers
M4 (2024 to 2025)MacBook Pro 14 and 16, MacBook Air 13 and 15Air starts at 16GB and drives two external displays with the lid open; Pro models gain Thunderbolt 5 on M4 Pro and MaxA sensible default for a new purchase
M5 (2025 onwards)MacBook Pro 14Newer graphics generation, aimed at AI and creative workloadsFor heavy creative and technical work

The practical rule for 2027: the newer the chip, the longer the software support, and memory matters more than chip generation for everyday speed. An M2 with 16GB often feels smoother in daily use than an M3 with 8GB. Every MacBook Air with M4 starts at 16GB, which is why M4 is a safe default.

Is an M1 MacBook still worth buying in 2027?

Yes, for the right buyer and at the right price. An M1 MacBook Air is still quick for writing, research, browsing, Office, Zoom and light photo editing, and its battery life is better than most new Windows laptops. It suits:

  • Students on reading and writing courses.
  • Office and admin work.
  • A second laptop or a laptop for a child.

It is a poor fit for:

  • Anyone who wants five more years of new macOS versions.
  • Heavy multitaskers on 8GB of memory.
  • Video editing beyond short clips.

If you buy an M1 in 2027, treat it as a three-year laptop and check battery health carefully. See our MacBook Air M1 guide.

Which MacBook should you buy for your work in 2027?

Brand new or UK used MacBook in 2027?

Brand new is best when you want the newest chip, the longest software runway and a full battery. A new MacBook Air bought in 2027 should comfortably last four to five years.

UK used stretches your budget, for example to a MacBook Pro instead of an Air, or to 16GB instead of 8GB. Three checks matter more than anything else:

  1. Activation Lock off. The previous owner's Apple ID must be signed out (System Settings, then the name at the top).
  2. No device management. There should be no profile under System Settings, General, Device Management. A company-managed MacBook can be locked remotely.
  3. Battery health and cycle count. Check System Information, Power. Apple rates MacBook batteries to keep about 80% of their capacity at 1,000 cycles.

At MachineWura every pre-owned device passes a 30-point inspection with at least 85% battery health before it is listed.

A worked example: M1 with 8GB or M3 with 16GB?

Two used MacBook Airs are available: an M1 with 8GB and 256GB, and an M3 with 16GB and 512GB, which costs more. The buyer is a university student starting in 2027 who will use it for four years: Office, research with many browser tabs, Zoom lectures and some Canva and photo editing.

  • Software runway: the M3 is three years newer, so it is likely to receive new macOS versions for longer.
  • Memory: with 8GB, many tabs plus Zoom plus Canva will slow the M1 down by third year. 16GB will not.
  • Storage: 256GB fills up with four years of photos, lecture recordings and downloads unless the student manages it carefully. 512GB removes the worry.

For a four-year degree, the M3 is the better value even at a higher price. For a buyer who needs a laptop for one or two years of light work, the M1 is the sensible saving.

Common mistakes when buying a MacBook in 2027

  • Buying an Intel MacBook because it is cheap. Its macOS updates are ending.
  • Choosing 8GB for a laptop you will keep for years. Memory cannot be upgraded.
  • Skipping the Activation Lock check on a used MacBook. It is the most expensive mistake you can make.
  • Paying for a Pro you do not need. For documents, browsing and calls, the Air is just as fast and lighter.
  • Forgetting Windows-only software. Check your course or job first. See MacBook vs Windows laptops.

Frequently asked questions

Which MacBook is best to buy in 2027?

A MacBook Air with an M2, M3 or M4 chip and 16GB of memory suits most people. Choose a MacBook Pro for video editing, heavy development or music production.

Is the M1 MacBook Air still good in 2027?

Yes, for students and office work, especially at a lower price. It is the oldest Apple silicon generation, so expect a shorter runway of new macOS versions than newer models.

Should I buy an Intel MacBook in 2027?

No. Apple announced that macOS Tahoe is the last major macOS version for Intel Macs.

How long will a MacBook bought in 2027 last?

A new MacBook Air should comfortably last four to five years. A used M-series MacBook depends on its chip generation and battery health.

Is 8GB enough on a MacBook in 2027?

For light use, yes. For multitasking, design, coding or editing, choose 16GB. It cannot be upgraded later.

When does Apple release new MacBooks?

Apple does not follow a fixed annual date for MacBooks. New models have arrived at different times of year, so check Apple's site for the newest models before you buy.
