In Ghana, air conditioners are usually sold by horsepower (HP). Picking the right size is the difference between a cool room and a high bill with a warm room.
Quick sizing guide
| AC size | Approx. BTU | Typical room |
|---|---|---|
| 1 HP | 9,000 | Small bedroom or study |
| 1.5 HP | 12,000 | Medium bedroom or small office |
| 2 HP | 18,000 | Large bedroom or living room |
| 2.5 HP | 24,000 | Large living room or open office |
These are rules of thumb. Use the factors below to decide whether to size up.
When to size up
- Afternoon sun: rooms facing west or with large windows heat up fast.
- Many people: offices, salons and shops with customers.
- Heat sources: kitchens nearby, computers or equipment.
- High ceilings or open plan: more air to cool.
- Top floor rooms under an uninsulated roof.
Why the right size matters
- Too small: the AC runs at full power for hours and the room never feels cool.
- Too big: it cools quickly but cycles on and off, wastes power and leaves the air clammy.
Inverter or not?
Once you know the size, decide on technology. An inverter split AC costs more but uses less electricity for rooms cooled many hours a day. Read inverter vs non-inverter AC.
Installation checklist
- Indoor unit away from direct sun and on a solid wall.
- Outdoor unit in a shaded, ventilated spot.
- Short, well-insulated copper pipe run.
- A stabilizer sized for the AC.
- A qualified technician to install it.
Frequently asked questions
Can one AC cool two rooms? Not well. A split AC cools the room it is in; use one unit per room.
What temperature should I set? Around 24–26 °C is comfortable and keeps running costs down.
